Write-Start Backpack ProjectWrite-Start Backpack Project is in its 19th year of gathering school supplies and backpacks for needy school children. Since its inception in 1990 we have provided over 11,500 backpacks to Santa Cruz County students. Each year the community and local businesses have come together to provide support for local needy youth. In 2007 we received 700 backpacks from COSTCO filled with school supplies. Capitola Book Café (link to: made a generous donation from sales of the latest Harry Potter book. And local Lutheran Churches raised $1,500 to augment a $1,000 grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans (link to: using the funds to purchase and fill 109 backpacks for our program. In addition to these gifts, numerous private donors have contributed backpacks, school supplies, and cash donations for a total of over $18,600 of community donations to assist needy children heading back to school. The overwhelming outpour of assistance allowed us to distribute over 1,000 backpacks for the start of this school year. The scope of our project is made possible not only by the continued support of donors like COSTCO, but also by the excellent media coverage from the Register Pajaronian (link to uploaded WS, August 25th.pdf), Mid-County Post, Good Times, Santa Cruz Sentinel (link to uploaded WS, July 29th.pdf) and KSBW television.

Thanks to everyone who assisted us this year. If you need a backpack for your child, please call Nohemi at 831.477.5422.
