ROP Photo Class at Renaissance High Participates in Public Art Show

Tasty Art Show

Parts of downtown Watsonville took on a new look during the installation of more than 70 large photographic prints as part of the outdoor exhibit Tasty: Everyone Has a Place at the Table.

The project, a collaboration between the Pajaro Valley Arts Council and the Santa Cruz County Regional Occupational Program, features photographs by students that were plastered against various buildings. The PVAC was invited by the San Jose Museum of Art to participate in an exhibit interpreting the theme "Around the Table."

Renaissance High School photography instructor Karen Lemon asked her students for their interpretation of the theme. Students from E.A. Hall Middle School and Renaissance were joined by numerous adult and youth volunteers for the one-day installation.

Lemon, a professional photographer for more than 20 years, has been an instructor of photography for the last six years through the Regional Occupational Program at Renaissance High School. Lemon and her students worked with the PVAC in 2012 on the public art project "Peace in Our Streets: You Only Live Once," a part of the global Inside-Out Project. Most of the photos measure approximately 3 feet wide by 4 feet tall, with some being 6 by 9 feet. A large 20-by-14-foot photo was installed in seven different sections.

"I introduced the idea of the collaborative project in October," Lemon said. "And although I showed my students some of the posters from the previous project many of them really had no idea of the magnitude of the project until we started hanging it. So it was really fun to watch them as the images were unfurled, especially the 6 by 9 foot panels. They were all smiles and excitement."
