Regional Occupational Program (ROP) and Cabrillo Summer Career Academy 2009

Santa Cruz County Office of Education's Regional Occupational Program (ROP), in collaboration with Cabrillo College and Cabrillo Advancement Program (CAP) offered a one-week Summer Career Academy to middle and high school students to encourage exploration of career options.

Held on the Cabrillo campus, students participated in a fun filled, fast paced look at four different career paths through hands on exploration and activities. They also attended seminar sections on College Knowledge and Financial Aid.

“Our belief is that the sooner a student can access a college campus, the more likely they will be to achieve the goal of attending post-secondary education. Furthermore, we believe that the earlier a student is aware of different careers, the more likely they will be to embark on a pathway of education which will lead to their chosen career.”
—Bryan Wall, ROP Director

The career activities were based on labor market information for Santa Cruz County with the focus to expose students to the following high wage, high demand careers in:

  • Agriculture
  • Health and Medical
  • Public Safety: Fire, and Law Enforcement
  • Video Production

The Summer Camp was coordinated by Middle School Career Outreach Coordinator, Karen Lemon, and Director of CAP, Elizabeth Dominguez. It was staffed with ROP teachers: Larkin Wilson, Video Production;Lisa Glick, Agriculture;Jim Howes, Public Safety;Deb Tracy, Medical; and CAP mentors and other community volunteers.

A big thank you goes out to Cabrillo College for hosting this event.

The Summer Academy video was conceptualized and co-directed by Larkin Wilson and Karen Lemon.
