Human Resources: U.S. Constitution Exam

The Santa Cruz County Office of Education is a proctor for the U.S. Constitution exam for credential candidates. The exam is administered by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and may be necessary for candidates seeking a teaching credential.

This exam is directed towards individuals who have not met the CCTC requirement through an appropriate course (either at the undergraduate or post-baccalaureate level).

Exam Format & Content

  • 75 true/false questions.
  • Approximate completion time: 90 minutes.
  • Principles of the U.S. Constitution.
  • The political institutions created by the Constitution.

Cost

  • $60 processing fee - Check or Money Order payable to: UC Regents. Payments must be made on the day of the exam. ?plus-
  • $20 administrative fee - A separate Check or Money Order payable to: Santa Cruz County Office of Education.
  • Sorry, we cannot accept cash, credit or debit cards.

Exam Schedule & Site

  • Exam offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2p.m., except on designated holidays.

Exam Preparation

  • Valid photo ID with your signature is required on the day of the exam.
  • Be prepared to devote an adequate amount of study time and preparation.
  • A study guide, Twenty Five Lessons In Citizenship is available at the SCCOE on a first come basis. There is a $20 deposit fee, which will be returned when the study guide is returned into the SCCOE (cash is accepted).
  • You may also check out the study guide at your local library or you may purchase a copy of the guide at a local bookstore.
  • You are not permitted to bring any assistive materials to the exam, including cell phones and/or hand held devices.

Notification of Results

  • UCLA will grade the exam and directly notify test takers by letter of certification. Results generally take about 2 weeks to generate.

Retaking the Exam

  • A one time retake is permitted
  • The original $60 exam fee covers the cost of the retake.
  • You will be required to pay an additional $20 administrative fee.
  • Two non-pass exam results: If the exam is not passed on the retake, UCLA's policy requires the individual to enroll in and pass an appropriate class to fulfill the U.S. Constitution requirement. You should contact your local community college. There are no exceptions.
