Getting Ready for School: Write-Start Backpack Project Update
On Saturday, August 11th, the "Stuff the Bus" Event collected close to 300 backpacks and a variety of school supplies. Community sponsors that have contributed this year to the Write-Start Backpack Project include The United Way of Santa Cruz County, Palace Art & Office Supply, Bay Federal Credit Union, Driscoll’s Berries, MTS Training Academy, Santa Cruz County Bank, and the Aptos United Methodist Church, who donated 32 high school backpacks filled with all the necessary school supplies, and Costco-Santa Cruz, who donated 200 backpacks filled with school supplies. Volunteers from United Way of Santa Cruz County, Driscoll’s Berries, and Bay Federal Credit Union helped fill the donated backpacks and then stuffed the school bus with the collected donations.
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has supported the Write-Start Backpack Project!
Families began picking up their backpacks on Tuesday, August 14th. The joy on the children’s faces when they see their backpacks is indescribable. We have so far assisted over 130 families and 8 local agencies that support needy families in Santa Cruz County. We hope to serve more children with the support of our community!
Although we are far from reaching this year’s goal of 1000 backpacks, it’s not too late to help us get there! We are still accepting donations. Cash donations can be made through our PayPal account or by mailing a check to "Students in Transition" c/o the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. If you would like to donate backpacks or school supplies, please drop them off at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, 400 Encinal Street, Santa Cruz, or make arrangements to have your donation picked up by calling 831.466.5710.
Write-Start Project Kicked off July 23, 2012
Mission
Write-Start Backpack Project is in its 23rd year of gathering school supplies and backpacks for needy school children. Since its inception in 1989 we have provided over 24,600 backpacks to Santa Cruz County students. Each year the community and local businesses have supported the Write-Start Project. Recently, our local Girl Scout Juniors troop completed a leadership service project by running a book donation drive. They raised over 1600 books from the following locations: St. Joseph’s and Resurrection churches and Good Shepherd Catholic School. All books were donated to serve homeless and needy children.

The Write-Start Project works together with the United Way Santa Cruz. The scope of our project is made possible by the excellent media coverage from the Register Pajaronian, Mid-County Post, Good Times,Santa Cruz Sentinel and KSBW television.
