Santa Cruz County Student Wins Statewide Spelling Championship

California's best spellers 2010!

Sixty of the state’s top elementary school spellers met in Rohnert Park on Saturday, May 15 to compete in the California State Elementary Spelling Championship. These students, representing 32 California counties, had already won school and county spelling bees. Each county’s top two spellers were eligible to compete in the state event.

After eight rounds of competition, Santa Cruz County’s Andrew Miller, a 12-year-old sixth-grader from San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District's Ocean Grove Charter School, won the top prize by correctly spelling sesquicentennial, then gorgonize. He received a trophy and a $1,000 U.S Savings Bond. His school will receive a wall clock commemorating his achievement. Margaret Hedrick, a sixth-grader at Mission Hills Middle School, Santa Cruz City Schools District, also represented Santa Cruz County at the event.

Driven Raceway was this year's partner agency. The competition featured a racing theme, consisting of an electric kart, tires, racing celebrity cutouts, and festive balloons. Rob and Joss, Froggy 92.9 morning radio DJ’s introduced spellers virtually from Driven Raceway in Rohnert Park.

Congratulations to Andrew and Margaret! They did an outstanding job of representing Santa Cruz County.
