Site Administrator’s Contributions to Participating Teacher Success
- Assign new teachers within the area of their pre-service preparation
- Review the new teacher’s class list(s) to ensure a balance among department/grade level team’s class profiles in relation to students with special needs, English Learners, and student performance levels.
- Place Participating Teachers in situations that offer the most opportunity for success (e.g. avoid split grade levels, limit movement to classrooms and assign thoughtful prep periods with colleagues)
- Conduct an initial site orientation for Participating Teachers (refer to Site Orientation document)
- Provide necessary materials, resources, and equipment
- Build a school culture of valuing new staff and sharing practice
- Encourage a community of learning that focuses on the State-adopted academic content standards, performance levels for students, and the California Standards for the Teaching Profession
- Facilitate opportunities for Participating Teachers to observe experienced teachers
- Support Participating Teachers to meet all legislative requirements enabling them to receive their Professional Clear Credential
Site Administrator - Mentor Partnership for Teacher and Student Success
SC/SVNTP Site Orientation
Site Administrator’s Facilitation of Induction Program Success
- Communicate questions or concerns about the program with Mentors, program director or district liaison who sits on the SC/SVNTP Steering Committee
- Participate in consortium events to understand program goals and to facilitate an integrated induction program within the site/district context
- Take organizational action to ensure support for Participating Teachers and program success
- Participate in the program evaluation process by completing the mid-year NTC Induction Survey and end-of-year BTSA Statewide Survey
- Collaborate with Mentor in order to better understand program goals and to make linkages among processes for new teacher evaluation and goal setting, formative assessment, and professional development for Participating Teachers
- Meet with Mentor(s) who are supporting Participating Teachers at the site every 4-6 weeks for the purpose of ongoing communication
- Respect the confidentiality between Mentor and Participating Teacher
- Take part in three-way meetings with Participating Teacher and Mentor, as necessary or requested, to discuss observations of successes and concerns
Scope of the SC/SVNTP Mentor Responsibilities in working with the Site Administrator, as outlined in Mentor Letter of Commitment
- Participate in discussions about what standard(s) the teacher is currently addressing
- Participate in discussions in how the Mentor might assist with the goals the site administrator has for a teacher
- Discuss formative assessment and induction processes with administrator and staff
- Advocate for conditions that support teacher success and enhance student performance
- Participate in a three-way conversation with administrator, teacher and Mentor in support of the teacher when appropriate
Beyond the SC/SVNTP Mentor’s Responsibilities
- Provide evaluative feedback to administrator
- Substitute for an absent staff member
- Act as a supervisor/evaluator
- Use subjective or evaluative language in discussing a teacher
- Coach a struggling veteran teacher
- Act as a “go-between” with principal and teacher
- Facilitate faculty meetings
Other Partners in Induction for Student Success:
Steering Committee Contributions
- Oversee all aspects of the SC/SVNTP BTSA Induction Program to fully implement the program design that incorporates the necessary support and resources to ensure that Participating Teachers have every opportunity to successfully complete the induction program to receive their Professional Clear Credential and to ensure program success in the district. Measurable progress will be demonstrated in order to continue the partnership.
- Facilitate designation of district in-kind funds to support the program as required by the BTSA guidelines
- Attend all quarterly Steering Committee meetings, comprised of project, district and site administrators, university faculty, and human resource directors, or send a district office alternate when unable to attend
- Ensure full cooperation and participation of district staff in program activities to include: for Mentors, mandatory trainings and weekly professional development at Mentor forums; mandatory seminars for Participating Teachers; trainings and meetings for district office administrators, including curriculum and instruction and human resources leaders and site administrators; SC/SVNTP and network activities
- Discuss program implementation and provide updates at district Leadership Team meetings and at Board meetings
- Ensure a cadre of experienced new teacher Mentors is in place, each Mentor supporting a caseload of Participating Teachers
- Meet with district Mentors on a consistent basis to ensure proper program implementation
- Assess Mentor performance based on feedback from Participating Teachers, site administrators, and SC/SVNTP leaders, and take appropriate steps to ensure program success
- Create district teacher assessment and staff development programs that reflect the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) and the BTSA Induction Program Standards and encourage a culture and community of professional learning
- Conduct and participate in program evaluation and research activities, including the NTC Induction Survey, the BTSA Statewide Survey, the collection of STAR scores, district assessment and other data, and other appropriate activities
- Follow the guidelines set forth regarding proprietary materials managed by UCSC for SC/SVNTP use
- Take budgetary and organizational action to ensure that the new teacher support program is sustained
- Communicate questions or concerns about the program with program director
Human Resources’ Contributions
- Identify teachers who are eligible for SC/SVNTP support, and notify the SC/SVNTP
- Send required documentation for each eligible teacher to the SC/SVNTP as soon as possible
- At the point of hiring, inform all eligible teachers of their responsibility to enter an induction program within 120 calendar days
- Remain in close contact with the SC/SVNTP office regarding induction progress (for the purpose of professional growth and completion of credential requirements)
School Board’s Contributions
- Study the SC/SVNTP BTSA Induction Program and take appropriate steps to ensure successful district implementation; measurable progress will be demonstrated in order to continue the partnership.

Teacher Association’s Contributions
- Study the SC/SVNTP BTSA Induction Program and take appropriate steps to ensure successful district implementation
- Ensure full cooperation and participation of Participating Teachers in program activities
- Support administrators in providing site orientations, balanced classes and a reduction of adjunct responsibilities for Participating Teachers
- Participate in BTSA informational events such as the Fall Informational Forum, Spring Induction Summit, and New Teacher Center National Symposium, as well as celebratory events such as the SC/SVNTP New Teacher Celebration and Colloquium
- Encourage a culture and community of professional learning among all certificated staff
- Take organizational action to ensure that the new teacher support program is sustained
- Communicate questions or concerns about the program with program director
