Math Contest 2011: Coming Together for a Fun Filled Day of Math
On May 7, 2011, more than five hundred fifth through eighth grade students came together on a prized weekend day at Aptos High School to challenge themselves in the 44th annual Santa Cruz County Math Contest. The contestants represented 29 schools from across the county. Each year there are more participants, demonstrating that many students think math can be fun.
The contest, administered at two levels (grades 5/6 and 7/8) is divided into two categories of competition: groups made up of 3 – 5 students each, and individuals. Students have the option of participating in one or both categories. Most students chose to do both.
The contest provides students with an opportunity to solve multiple step problems, both in an individual and team environment. Adding to the challenge, these types of problems are not necessarily something they see every day. Contestants in grades five and six were not allowed to use calculators, but those in grades seven and eight could use four-function or scientific calculators. However, the support of a team during the group testing seemed to be the best tool for success.
About fifty parents and teacher volunteers helped to supervise the testing rooms and score the student tests. This year, volunteers were treated to coffee donated by Starbucks on 41st Avenue and Soquel.
The winners were announced Tuesday, May 10th. Students who place first through third were recognized along with some honorable mentions in certain categories. All of the top-performing students in each category will also receive medals at a ceremony on Thursday, May 26th at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education at 5:00 p.m. in the Tech Center.
