Common Core, ELD and Next Generation Science Standards
Common Core and State Standards
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed through a state-led initiative to establish consistent and clear education standards for English-language arts and mathematics that would better prepare students for success in the competitive global economy. The CC Literacy standards acknowledge and support the notion that college and career ready students will also need support reading, writing and using content specific academic language in areas such as science, social studies, history and other technical areas.
By law, the ELA standards must be supported with the development of ELD (English Language Development) Standards. ELD standards help guide curriculum, instruction, and assessment for English learners who are developing the English language skills needed to engage successfully with state subject matter standards for college and career readiness.
Along with new standards in ELA and mathematics, we are completing a state-led process to develop new K -12 science standards. These standards are rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education.
New history and social studies standards will be developed in the near future.
