May 23 (Part II) FAIR Education Act Training The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act in 2011 amended the education code to require schools to integrate factual information about social movements, current events and history of people with disabilities and GLBTQ people into existing social studies lessons.
With the passage of the FAIR Act, California teachers are looking for GLBTQ history materials for their classes. We are also asking questions about how to teach GLBTQ history effectively: How do we make GLBTQ history relevant and interesting to all students? How can GLBTQ history help students understand today’s issues? How do we navigate the controversies that are embedded in the issues?
Will Grant has been teaching a GLBTQ history class for four years at the Athenian School in
Danville, CA. In this workshop, he will share his lessons learned and course materials he created for both world and US history.
This is an entertaining presentation with information that will surprise you. With topics like legal same sex marriage in the Roman empire, lesbians in the suffrage movement, and gay samurai, you’ll gain a new sense of GLBTQ history and how it shapes our understanding of our world today. The
second, follow up workshop will focus on developing lesson plans and navigating the controversies in teaching GLBTQ history.
