Alternative Education Schools
Watsonville Community School
Watsonville Community School has served the Pajaro Valley community
for over 15 years. The purpose of the school is
to provide students with an alternative learning setting
where they can successfully continue their education
while being a contributing member of the community. The curriculum emphasis is on basic skills combined with
flexibility and a wide range of creative strategies. The
environment is carefully planned and organized by the
staff with the support of local school districts, the
probation department and a collaboration of social
services and counselors.
A highly accomplished, caring, close-knit group
of teachers assists students to engage in academic, social and emotional health. Students at Watsonville
Community develop a strong sense of belonging and learn to recognize the worth and value of others. A
high percentage of teens attain academic success because the school’s expectations of students are high,
clear, concise, and realistic.
A low student to teacher ratio allows students to not only experience
the core curriculum in a positive setting but also participate
in an array of elective classes. These include technology and
vocational education. Additionally, participation in the Santa
Cruz County Alternative Schools Sports League in volleyball, basketball
and softball is very popular.
The T.A.P. (Teen Age Parenting) Program, with Day Care Center, is on site. Individual learning plans are
developed to help those students who are also parents. Students are able to continue their education
and learn the skills that help them to be effective, nurturing parents.
In a student’s own words:
“I have opened myself to the world. Thanks to the social skills
you taught me, I learned so much. I have found a way to speak
up, to stand up for myself and to be strong. In other schools,
I never felt important. You made me feel important every day.
Never in my life have I felt so proud of going to school. You
made me feel special, worth something. Guilt and anger were my
problems and I was not able to enjoy life. Now I understand people
more and know how to talk to others and express myself. I’m ready
to start living my life...”
Thank you!
There are only two lasting
bequests we can hope to give
our children. One of these is
roots, the other is wings
.
