OASIS Student Wesley Watts wins Grove ScholarshipWesley did not arrive at Oasis in the usual way, by opening the door and walking in. Wes was shot out of a cannon and his orbit briefly passed by Oasis on his way to world domination. Before Wesley entered his senior year however, the path he would take after graduation appeared murky. A serendipitous encounter with a young and inspiring teacher (Megan Thom) at Oasis Independent Studies during a 5 week session of summer school changed the course of his life. From there, he enrolled in a Green Careers course through ROP. Things subsequently began to click. Through the display of extraordinary initiative Wes became a Grove Scholar, a successful Cabrillo Student, an ROP young entrepreneur, a paid environmental volunteer, a photographer. and was selected to participate in the Summer Energy Academy sponsored by Cabrillo College’s MESA. Wesley returned to Oasis in the second semester of his senior year to expand his educational and volunteer options and under the guidance of Jeanne Milnes he crystallized his future plans. Given his enthusiasm and commitment, there is no doubt that Wes will convert the masses to green building and green living and he will make sure that we have a great time doing it.
Wesley and his teacher Jeanne Milnes Velva Childress to complete ROP Dental ProgramOASIS student Velva Childress will be graduating this year a full year ahead of schedule. In addition to working hard to complete high school requirements, she will also be completing the ROP Dental Assistant Program. She has been awarded for her efforts by both the Rotary Club of Santa Cruz and the California Dental Association with scholarships to begin classes at Cabrillo College this Fall to continue her studies in Dental Hygiene. She is a highly motivated and fun spirited young woman and we have truly enjoyed having her at OASIS this school year. Congratulations Velva. You are a shining star and we couldn't be more proud of you ! Furthermore we are sure that Velva will be brightening up the world with many shining smiles.

OASIS Student publishes book !!
OASIS student Patricia O'Connor recently published her first book entitled "The Tale of Socrates, Cat Philosopher". The serendipitous discovery of the itty-bitty kitty Socrates in a cleaning bucket behind the Hermes Hotel on the Greek Island of Syros was the beginning of an unforgettable journey and an everlasting friendship between Patricia and Socrates who is now residing in Aptos. With the help of Independent Studies teacher Tracy Schultz, Patricia spent two years writing and illustrating the story of Socrates. On April 19th, Patricia conducted her first book reading at Bookworks in Aptos. Patricia's book is available at several local bookstores.
"I never imagined that my best friend would have four legs, a long striped tail, soft and silken fur, and ears that look like two triangles. But, Socrates, that was before I met you." |
