Character Based Literacy
Character Based Literacy is a year-long course based on five "value theme units that use a wide variety of recommended readings and support materials to meet the Language Arts Standards," build literacy skills and increase positive social thoughts, values, and behaviors. Put simply, it's a literacy program designed to produce outcomes in three areas: knowledge, skills and character.
This course was developed by Johnny Rice, Alternative Education Programs, SCCOE. Special thanks to Brother Steve Johnson of the Markula Center for Applied Ethics, Santa Clara University, for providing the framework upon which this course was built and also for providing materials, guidance and expertise.
